SUMMARY OF INCLUSION

Inclusion means...

  • special education students are included in the general education classroom
  • same opportunities for all
  • equal treatment; sense of belonging
  • educating all children regardless of their disability
  • no isolation or discrimination
  • allowing even the most diverse learners to participate in learning
  • a teacher is responsible for including differentiated instruction and adapting lesson plans to meet the needs of his/her students
  • a way to mainstream students

Inclusion is a controversial topic. There are many different perspectives, including:

1. TEACHERS
-great in theory, but is it realistic?
-how do we define the responsibilities between general education and special education teachers?
-how do you balance instruction fairly between general and special education?

2. PARENTS
-does it take away from the more advanced learners?
-will my child get the instruction and attention that s/he needs?

3. STUDENTS
-will I stand out in an inclusion classroom?
-do I feel comfortable?
