Cons of Drug Therapy

The cons of drug therapy for ADD/ADHD include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • side effects are common (including stomachaches, headaches, difficulty sleeping)
  • diminished growth when compared to peers (as much as 0.5” shorter per year)
  • long-term side effects to drug therapy have not been studied
  • declining benefit over an extended period
    • after three years the results related to drugs are not significantly better than those related to behavior therapy
  • studies show increased delinquent behavior and substance abuse
